GALLE FORT
One of the best preserved Colonial Dutch forts anywhere in the world, Galle Fort presents itself as a microcosm of Colonial Dutch Architecture. A wonderfully atmospheric place to visit, it’s a living breathing community within the fort walls. Meander through the ramparts and discover intriguing shops and fine restaurants hidden in this gem of a city. Buddhist temples, mosques and 18th century Dutch churches all within easy walking distance.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
All within access there are so many options for you to enjoy and experience. Unawatuna Beach is a short drive, offering several scuba diving schools to take you to near by reefs. Surfers can enjoy the great Indian ocean rollers all along the southern coast; the nearest major surfing beach is at Midigama approx 20 mins by van from Kalahe. Further along the coast about 4 hours drive is the world famous Aragon Bay for surfer diehards. Or take a stroll at sunset along the pristine beach at our sister property, Ambalama Villa*, and watch the fishermen perched on their stilts .And for those prepared to stay up late,try your luck and wait for the turtles to come up the beach to lay their eggs in season right by the villa.
The Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve is only an hour away and further afield are the Uda Walawe National Park and the Yala National Park ,home of the rare leopard.
During the past few years the Galle Literary Festival held in the second half of January has attracted many world famous authors. For sports lovers the Galle cricket ground,some 10 mins away. hosts Test matches and the annual elephant polo tournament is not to be missed.
